Becky Hobbs, 5th-great
granddaughter of Nancy Ward, Beloved Woman of the Cherokee, recently visited
Long Island on the Holston River in Kingsport, Tennessee, where Nancy Ward gave
her famous speech in 1781. The
Americans present included Col. William Christian and John Sevier, who were
perplexed that the Cherokee would let a woman
speak for them. In her
speech, Nancy said, “You Americans look at women as though we are nothing. But
we are your mothers; you are our sons. Our
cry is all for peace. Let it
continue. This peace must last
forever. Let your mother’s sons
be ours, our sons be yours. Let
your women hear our words.” Hobbs was in Kingsport to play a
concert, and also to speak about her upcoming musical, based on the life of
Nancy Ward, NANYEHI-BELOVED WOMAN OF THE CHEROKEE. Becky, a Bartlesville, Oklahoma native and Cherokee Nation
Citizen, has written songs for Conway Twitty, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Glen
Campbell, Emmylou Harris, Alabama (including the evergreen “Angels Among
Us”), Helen Reddy, Shirley Bassey and others.
As a recording artist, she has had over 25 chart records, including
“Jones on the Jukebox,” and has performed in over 40 countries. Hobbs has written/co-written 16
songs for the musical and co-wrote the script with playwright/director Nick
Sweet. The musical will be
workshopped at NSU in Tahlequah this summer.
The premier date/venue has not yet been determined. Hobbs lives in Nashville with
her husband, music producer/guitarist Duane Sciacqua. Picture

Beckaroo & Duane visited Becky's old high school friend, Hans Schmoldt and his lovely wife, Kathy, in Grand Junction, CO when Duane was playing Country Jam with Rodney Atkins. Rodney has had three #1's in a row, and each stayed at #1 for multiple weeks. It was a great concert (30,000 people) and Hans & Kathy rolled out the red carpet, with 2 fun-filled days of rafting down the Colorado, drinking in sky chairs looking out at the beautiful western skies, shooting bottles with a slingshot, and a catered dinner under the Colorado stars with fantastic pianist, Roy Hutchins entertaining. Here's shots of Duane & Rodney on stage: And more on the Beckaroo:

ALABAMA SURPRISES THE BECKAROO The Beckaroo experienced one of the greatest "highs" of her career Oct. 17th in Lexington, Kentucky. Since she had missed ALABAMA when they performed in Nashville earlier in the summer (she was in Oklahoma) and since this is ALABAMA's "Farewell Tour", she was bound and determined to catch her all-time favorite group one last time. She and Duane were watching the sold-out concert, and Randy Owen started talking about Becky and invited her up on stage! Becky and Randy sang I WANT TO KNOW YOU BEFORE WE MAKE LOVE together (written by Becky & Candy Parton, recorded by ALABAMA in 1985). The crowd cheered her on when she came in on verse two and at the end of the song Randy hit some incredible notes...wow! According to the Beckaroo, "Randy Owen is one of the best singers of our generation. I was so honored and humbled just to be on the same stage as Randy and ALABAMA...they ROCKED. They gave the fans their all!" After the duet, Randy proceeded to tell the audience how much ANGELS AMONG US has meant to ALABAMA and invited Becky to stay up and sing some more! (As most of you know, Beckaroo & Don Goodman wrote ANGELS AMONG US and ALABAMA recorded it in 1993). "Randy and I traded off lines in the verses, then on the choruses, he held the mic out to the audience. I got chills hearing 20,000 people all singing along. It was the experience of a lifetime. This was a moment that I have dreamed of. Surely in the last 20 seconds of my life, this will be one of the scenes that pass before me. Thank you Randy. Thank you ALABAMA. Thank you fans! And most of all, THANK YOU GOD, for the gift of this song."
